Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Help for North Bergen
Parts A and B pick up most of the bill, though never all of it. This year you face $1,736 before hospital coverage starts in each benefit period, another $283 once a year before medical coverage starts, and after that you usually owe 20 percent of approved doctor and outpatient costs with no yearly ceiling. A Medicare Supplement policy, often called Medigap, is private insurance that picks up some or all of those leftover costs.
A supplement rides along with the federal program, so it goes wherever Medicare is taken, from Hudson County to Arizona. No networks, and no referral slips. That freedom is why many North Bergen retirees who split their time between New Jersey and family elsewhere choose this route.

The Plans People Ask About Most
Every policy is labeled with a letter, and the benefits behind each letter are fixed by law. Two companies selling Plan G sell identical coverage; they differ only in price and in how they raise rates.
- Plan G covers nearly every gap except the yearly Part B deductible
- Plan N has a lower premium but asks for small copays at some office and emergency visits
- High-deductible Plan G trades a lower premium for a large yearly deductible
Plans C and F, the two that also pay the Part B deductible, are closed to anyone who first qualified for Medicare in 2020 or later. If you qualified before that date, you may still be able to buy one.
Why Timing Is Everything
The protected time to buy is a half-year window that opens once you are both 65 and covered by Part B. Inside it, no insurer may refuse you or raise your price over health conditions. Once it closes, companies are free to ask about your medical history and say no, so we watch this date closely for anyone who is turning 65 or leaving a job plan.
If you are moving from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare, the rules are different. Some people have a trial right or another protected situation, and others will need to answer health questions. We sort that out before you drop any coverage.
Do Not Forget Drug Coverage
Medigap policies sold today do not cover prescriptions. Most people pair one with a separate Part D drug plan. Skip Part D at your first chance with no other creditable coverage and a permanent surcharge is added to any drug plan you join later.
Comparing Medigap With Medicare Advantage
A Medigap plan usually has a higher monthly premium than a Medicare Advantage plan, but lower and more predictable costs when you get care. Advantage plans often cost less each month and may add extras, but they come with networks and copays. Neither is better for everyone. We put both in front of you with your own doctors and medicines so the choice is clear.

Click to CallMedicare Supplement (Medigap) Questions
Can I use Medigap at Palisades Medical Center and in New York?
A supplement goes wherever Medicare is accepted, on either side of the river and anywhere in the country.
Will my Medigap premium go up?
Premiums can rise over time, and companies price their plans differently. We explain how each insurer sets its rates so you can weigh today's price against future changes.
Do I need a Medigap plan if I have retiree coverage?
Maybe not. Some retiree plans already fill the gaps. Bring your plan papers and we will compare them before you buy anything extra.
Is Medigap the same as Medicare Advantage?
No. A supplement sits on top of Parts A and B, while an Advantage plan delivers those benefits in their place. The two do not combine.
