Dental, Vision and Hearing Help for North Bergen

Many people are surprised to learn that Original Medicare does not cover routine cleanings, fillings, dentures, eye exams for glasses, eyeglasses or hearing aids. It does cover some related care, such as medically needed eye care for conditions like glaucoma or cataracts, and certain dental care tied to a hospital stay, but everyday care is mostly left to you.

For North Bergen residents who need new dentures or a hearing aid, those costs can run into the thousands. Planning ahead is the best way to keep them manageable.

Getting These Benefits Through Medicare Advantage

Many Medicare Advantage plans sold in Hudson County include some dental, vision and hearing coverage. The details vary a lot.

  • Dental can range from two cleanings a year to a yearly allowance for crowns, dentures or implants
  • Vision often covers a yearly eye exam and an allowance for frames or contacts
  • Hearing may include a yearly exam and a set amount toward hearing aids every year or two

Look past the headline. A plan that advertises a large dental allowance may limit you to certain dentists, require waiting periods for major work or pay only part of each service. We read the fine print with you.

Options If You Keep Original Medicare

If you choose Original Medicare with a Medigap policy, you can buy a separate dental, vision or hearing plan. These stand-alone plans have their own premiums, waiting periods and yearly maximums, so we compare what you would pay in premiums against what you expect to use. For some people, paying out of pocket or using a discount plan works out cheaper.

Hearing Aids Over the Counter

Since 2022, adults with mild to moderate hearing loss can buy FDA-regulated hearing aids over the counter without a prescription or exam. These can cost far less than prescription hearing aids. For more serious loss, or if you are not sure how severe yours is, a hearing exam is still the best first step, and some plans help pay for it.

Questions We Ask Before Recommending Coverage

  • Do you have a dentist you want to keep, and is that office in the plan network?
  • Do you expect major work, such as dentures or a crown, in the next year or two?
  • When did you last have an eye exam and new glasses?
  • Do you already wear hearing aids, and how old are they?

Your answers shape the comparison. We also review these benefits each fall during your annual plan review, because allowances and networks can change every year.

Dental, Vision and Hearing Questions

Does Medicare cover cataract surgery?

Yes. Original Medicare covers cataract surgery and one pair of eyeglasses or contacts after surgery with an intraocular lens.

Can I get dental coverage without a Medicare Advantage plan?

Yes. You can buy a stand-alone dental plan. We compare its yearly cost to what you expect to need.

Are the dental allowances in Advantage plans real money?

They are a benefit limit, not cash. The plan pays up to that amount for covered dental services each year, usually at network dentists.

Can I use my extra benefits in New York City?

It depends on the plan network. Some plans include dentists and eye doctors on both sides of the river, and others do not.
