Medicare Advantage Help for North Bergen
A Medicare Advantage plan, also called Part C, is sold by a private insurer that contracts with Medicare. Instead of using your red, white and blue card at every visit, you use the plan's card, and the plan pays for your hospital and doctor care. Most plans sold around Hudson County also fold in Part D drug coverage, and many add routine dental, vision or hearing benefits that Original Medicare leaves out.
The trade-off is the network. Advantage plans usually ask you to use their doctors and hospitals, and some ask for a referral before you see a specialist. For a North Bergen resident whose doctors are on River Road or along Kennedy Boulevard, that can work very well. For someone who winters in Florida or sees a specialist in another state, it may not. Our job is to show you which side of that line you fall on before you sign anything.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
How Advantage Plans Differ From Original Medicare
You still pay your Part B premium, which is $202.90 a month for most people in 2026, even when the plan itself has a $0 premium. In return, the plan sets its own copays for office visits, scans and hospital stays, and it must cap what you spend on covered in-network care each year. That yearly limit is the main safety net Original Medicare does not have on its own, which is why some people pair Original Medicare with a Medigap policy instead.
Plan types matter too. An HMO usually keeps you inside its network except in emergencies. A PPO lets you go out of network at a higher cost. Special Needs Plans serve people with certain conditions or with both Medicare and Medicaid, which we explain on our dual eligible page.
What We Check Before Suggesting a Plan
- Every doctor, specialist and hospital you use, looked up in the plan's current directory
- Each prescription, including dose, so we can see the tier and any prior authorization rule
- Your pharmacy, and whether it is preferred or standard in that plan
- The yearly out-of-pocket limit and the copays for the services you use most
- Extra benefits, and the dollar limits that come with them
We put the results side by side in plain words. If a plan looks cheap but leaves out the cardiologist you have seen for ten years, we tell you. A $0 premium is only a good deal if the rest of the plan fits your life.
When You Can Join or Switch
You can first join during your Initial Enrollment Period, the seven months around your 65th birthday month; see our turning 65 guide for the timing. After that, the fall Open Enrollment Period runs October 15 to December 7, with changes starting January 1. If you are already in an Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31 gives you one chance to switch plans or go back to Original Medicare.
Moving, losing employer coverage or qualifying for state help can open a Special Enrollment Period at other times of year. If you are not sure whether something that happened to you counts, ask. We would rather check than have you miss a window.
Local Care and Getting Around
Palisades Medical Center at 7600 River Road is the hospital many North Bergen families think of first, and we confirm whether it is in network for each plan you consider. If driving is hard, the township's senior center offers free weekday rides to medical appointments when you book 7 to 10 business days ahead, which can make a plan with a nearby network even easier to use.
Talk It Over Before You Decide
A free review with a local, licensed agent costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. We compare the plans we offer against your doctors, medicines and budget, in English or Spanish. Learn more about our agency.
Click to CallMedicare Advantage Questions
Is a $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan really free?
The plan premium may be $0, but you still pay the Part B premium, and you pay copays or coinsurance when you get care. We add those costs up using the services you actually use so you can compare plans fairly.
Can I leave a Medicare Advantage plan if I do not like it?
Yes, during the fall Open Enrollment Period or the January 1 to March 31 Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. Keep in mind that moving back to Original Medicare does not always guarantee you can buy a Medigap policy without health questions.
Do Advantage plans cover emergencies outside North Bergen?
Yes. Emergency and urgently needed care is covered anywhere in the United States. Routine care far from home is where networks can limit you, so tell us how often you travel.
Will my drug coverage be included?
Most Advantage plans in our area include Part D drug coverage. We check each of your medicines on the plan's list before we suggest it.
