Help Paying for Medicare Help for North Bergen
Medicare costs add up quickly. The Part B premium alone is $202.90 a month in 2026, and drug copays, deductibles and coinsurance come on top. For many North Bergen households living on Social Security, a single program can free up hundreds of dollars a month.
Before we talk about any plan, we check whether you might qualify for help. It is part of every free review, and it often changes which plan makes the most sense.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
Medicare Savings Programs
These state programs, funded with Medicaid dollars, help pay Medicare costs for people with limited income and savings.
- QMB, the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary program, can pay Part A and Part B premiums, deductibles, coinsurance and copays
- SLMB, the Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary program, pays the Part B premium
- QI, the Qualifying Individual program, also pays the Part B premium, subject to yearly funding
Qualifying for any of these programs also qualifies you for Extra Help with drug costs. People with QMB should never be billed for Medicare-covered services by providers who accept Medicare, a protection many people do not know about.
Extra Help With Prescriptions
Extra Help is a federal program run by Social Security that lowers Part D premiums, deductibles and copays. You can apply online or by phone. Once approved, you can also change drug plans more often than most people.
New Jersey Programs: PAAD and Senior Gold
New Jersey runs two drug assistance programs for residents 65 and older, and for some people with disabilities. PAAD, the Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled program, lowers what you pay for covered prescriptions to a small copay. Senior Gold helps people whose income is somewhat above the PAAD limit. Both work alongside a Part D plan, and income limits are updated each year, so check the current figures before you rule yourself out.
Some residents qualify for full NJ FamilyCare coverage too. If you have both Medicare and Medicaid, see our page on dual eligible plans.
Local Support Close to Home
The township senior center at 1441 45th Street offers programs, meals and free weekday medical rides booked 7 to 10 business days ahead. For free, neutral counseling and help with applications, the Hudson County NJ SHIP office at the Department of Aging and Veterans Affairs, 830 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City, can help, and the statewide NJ SHIP line is 1-800-792-8820.
What to Gather Before You Apply
- Your Medicare card and Social Security award letter
- Recent bank statements and any pension or other income letters
- A list of your prescriptions
- Any letters you have received from Medicaid or Social Security
We cannot approve applications, since the state and Social Security make those decisions, but we can tell you what each program looks for and help you get your papers in order. Then, in your yearly review, we make sure your plan still fits your new costs.
Talk It Over Before You Decide
A free review with a local, licensed agent costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. We compare the plans we offer against your doctors, medicines and budget, in English or Spanish. Learn more about our agency.

Do I have to be very poor to qualify?
Not always. Limits for some programs are above the poverty line, and New Jersey's limits can be higher than federal minimums. It is worth checking even if you think you earn too much.
Will my house count against me?
For the Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help, your home is generally not counted as a resource. Bank accounts and investments usually are.
How long does approval take?
It varies. Savings Programs can take several weeks. We help you understand what to expect and how to follow up.
Can I get help if I am under 65?
Some programs serve people under 65 who get Medicare because of a disability. We can check which ones apply to you.
